What is a travel visa?

I am just wondering if you need a visa for every country you travel or does it depend on other aspects like the time spent? Do you need a visa if you stay only two weeks in a foreign country? I am just exploring around Expedia and Orbitz and the question just popped in my head! Thanks!

A visa is a document that is issued by the country that you are visiting. It gives you permission to enter the country and stay for up to a specified period of time.

Each country decides for itself whether to require visas and for which nationalities. For example, a country may require a visa for US citizens but not French citizens.

If you are a US citizen, you can easily check this information at this link to the US State Department website: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1765.html

There are probably also links to this information on Expedia and Orbitz, but they may appear during the booking process. If so, just use the State Department link for your preliminary research.

it all depends on the country you are visiting and the country you are leaving from.
