Is orbitz reliable? (for buying plane tickets)?

I'm planing to go to Asia for spring break, and since i'm a student, i need to buy the cheapest tickets possible which i found on orbitz.com. but when i googled "orbitz review", i found a lot complaints to Orbitz. should i still go for it? I dont want to make a mistake and make my trip miserable and end up paying more so that's why i'm doing a lot of research before deciding if i want to buy with them. if you've bought international(esp. Asia) plane tickets through orbitz.com, how was it? good/bad experience, anything i should beware of, any hidden fees i should know, or any suggestion to find even cheaper tickets. please tell me. thanks a lot

on a side note, do you know how online travels site like orbitz, expedia gets the rates so cheap?

It's reliable, but there are also many more than can get you a better deal... Check out BookMe dot com. You can compare ALL the reputable travel sites, and save money. Good luck!

I would say Orbitz is just as good as Expedia and CheapTickets.com. You will probably find complaints for other travel websites as well. I do know that Orbitz has this guarantee that if you purchase your tickets and someone buys it for a lower price than you, they will refund you the difference.

As for how they get a cheap rate, maybe they have some partnership deal with the airlines. Also the travel websites are paid a commission for each airline ticket that is sold.

orbitz is very reliable. i've used it many times. just keep in mind that most of the airline tickets you are purchasing through them are non-refundable, non-transferable tickets. in a way you do get your money's worth if you're sure of your travel dates. try looking into the last minuted deals also.

good luck.

You will find bad reviews for any website. Orbitz is one of the major websites of it's kid, it is very reliable. They get their prices cheap becaue when airlines are desperate to sell seats they lower their prices and the websites jump onthat. Also, those ads for classmates.com and other stuff like that on the side of the screen at Orbitz they make a lot of money off of. After they use that to make their profit they use it so they can sell cheap tickets.

Orbitz is very reliable, as well as Expedia, Kayak.

Orbitz and Expedia are not just "websites", but renowned travel agencies or companies specialized in booking systems (like Amadeus). Nowadays everything goes through internet....

This companies usually have low prices on some routes due to they buy in advance large number of seats. Due to large number of visitors these companies have significant discounts offered by airliners.

For example, when you request information about a flight or hotel, these websites specialized in selling airline tickets and hotel booking (like Kayak) search almost all major airline, hotel, and travel sites. Then they give you options of booking directly from the travel supplier of their choice by clicking on a supplier's direct URL, calling the travel provider's tollfree phone number, or booking via Orbitz.

In general, search for most cheap flight offered regarding specific dates, and then go to airline website since there you will be generally offered with cheapest option.

im a referring travel agent check this site out since your a student it should help you big time. Low prices come from contract agreements from the company to the flight company.

This is the second year I have booked with Orbitz for my trip to the Bahamas. The have been very reliable as has priceline. I checked out he site Thumper has above and the same flight I have booked to Nassau on 2/21/09 from Chicago on USAir is $30 more per ticket than Orbitz. No offense Thumper.

  1. Hi,

Although student fares, most of the time, are discounted and have more flexible options, cheaper plane tickets are still available from the airlines themselves. Research large airline booking websites and budget airlines' websites to determine when you can travel on a tight budget. This will give you an overall idea as well as comparison on fares offered to a regular person and a student.
