How do I find cheap air fares?

Most search engines (travelocity, orbitz, etc) start with the travel dates. I don't know the travel dates because I want to travel when the fares are low. Is there a search tool that works this way?

There is: http://www.farecompare.com There's 2 really good options there to do exactly what you asked for. First, you can choose their "Research Cheapest Airfares" option; enter your 2 cities, click it, and voila.... Second, you can use their "Dream Trips" option; enter your city, click "change" and whoooomp... there it is! It's an amazing tool in the hunt to find the cheapest airfares. But not only that, when you click a fare you want, choose the available dates, it even compares it against more "unpublished" (aka "consolidator") fares to see if someone's selling it even cheaper than the airline itself has it in their computers or on sale.

The main drawback is the same as all other airfare search sites--some low-cost airlines such as Southwest and Allegiant do not participate in other booking sources, so if they serve your route, you have to check those individually.

It does depend where u are traveling but southwest sometimes has really good deals! :)

expedia.com, travelocity.com, priceline.com, hotwire.com, orbitz.com, travelation.com, airline websites, etc.

Most of these have a tab, link, or checkbox that allows you to see the lowest fares within a certain range of days.

Good luck!

For sure, orbitz does.

try

www.airfarewatchdog.com

most fares will be lowest when there arent any school holidays, so start your search there. Just put in random dates through the year, and you'll soon work out an average price.

Southwest sometimes let you know when a cheapter fare is available. Look into them, http://www.dealtaker.com/SouthwestAirlinesVacations-coupon-code-a2069-c.html

well. I dont know if this answers your question but their is a website called farecast.com that projects how much a air ticket would cost from certain airports. And it predicts if the price will go up or down or stay the same.

i think it depends entirely where you are travelling from and where you are travelling to.

www.ryanair.co.uk works a bit like that, I used to used fly with them all the time cheap.

Register yourself to Expedia.com. They will inform you when the tickets are low. It will remember the travel dates that you put in.
