i work parttime at a hotel (front desk)
these places you mentioned charge you WAY more than i do directly...sometimes my rooms will be starting at $ 99.00
but the guest has been charged $ 200.00 because they used the middle guy. i am not allowed to give reciepts if you use these middle guys...their rate from us is $ 35.00 a nite...
this is a crime to me.
Cheaper yes for the most part I have found. A travel agent is great for your personal trip for advice on things to see trip insurance ect. I guess if your on a basic trip (not a vacation) then expedia or orbitz is a good way to go to save a few dollars. I like the personal touch of a hometown travel agent. Yahoo travel is also a great way to book your own vacation.
In my experience, no. Airlines no longer pay commisions so all the flights are basically the same price everywhere. Hotels, cars, cruises are different...sometimes travel agents can get better deals for these items.
Check my site for specials
in my experience.....yes
Depends on what you are purchasing. Something that is uncomplicated might be worth purchasing online, but if you want to get advise on a tour or a destination that you are unsure about, an agent is your best option. Try your local AAA branch for the best rates on travel.
No. They may seem alright when you buy your ticket, but should you ever have a problem and need to get it resolved, you'll find that their customer service agents will do nothing but put you on hold endlessly and give you the run-around. Expedia in particular has deplorable customer service. Have a look at their Wikipedia entry for more information or just google "expedia complaints" and you'll see what I mean.
They used to be. Either the website have jacked up their commisions or travel agents have slashed them because it can go either way. Nowadays, you're better off doing some legwork, checking all the sites and calling a travel agent to find the best deal.
